The first ODI of the three-match series between Australia Women and South Africa Women turned out to be a one-sided encounter which was completely dominated by the hosts as they registered a convincing eight-wicket victory over the Proteas side in the contest. Although the match witnessed brilliant bowling performances from the whole unit of Australia, it was star all-rounder Ellyse Perry‘s delivery to dismiss Tazmin Brits that captivated the fans most.

Australia’s bowling brilliance​


After winning the toss, Australia Women elected to bowl, a decision that proved beneficial as their bowlers restricted South Africa Women to a total of 105 runs in 31.3 overs. Marizanne Kapp‘s resilient half-century, scoring 50 runs off 58 balls, was a lone bright spot in South Africa Women’s batting innings. Notably, Kapp retired hurt after sustaining an injury during her innings.

Australia’s bowlers, led by the impressive Alana King, showcased excellent discipline, with King securing three crucial wickets for just 19 runs in 4.3 overs. Megan Schutt and Annabel Sutherland also made valuable contributions, taking one wicket each.

Ellyse Perry’s phenomenal delivery to dismiss Tazmin Brits​


Amidst the flurry of wickets tumbling during the Proteas’ batting collapse, one pivotal moment unfolded with the dismissal of Brits. A yorker-length delivery from the Perry shattered Brits’ defences. Despite attempting to lean forward and drive the ball, it eluded the bat, sneaking beneath to mercilessly collide with the stumps. The resonating sound of the bails being dislodged echoed faintly in Brits’ ears while Perry erupted in exultation, celebrating a well-earned dismissal.

Beth Monney guides Australia to an easy win​


Chasing a modest target, Australia Women showcased their batting prowess, reaching 106/2 in just 19 overs. Beth Mooney played a pivotal role, scoring a quickfire 52 runs off 34 balls. Alyssa Healy, Phoebe Litchfield, and Perry also contributed vital runs, ensuring a comfortable victory for the home side.

In the bowling department, South African women struggled to make breakthroughs, with Mooney anchoring the innings for Australia. Despite efforts from Masabata Klaas and Nadine de Klerk, who took one wicket each, the target was chased down without much trouble.

Mooney’s match-winning innings earned her the well-deserved “Player of the Match” award. The series stands at 1-0 in favour of Australia Women, with the 2nd and 3rd ODI matches yet to be played. The next encounter is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7, at North Sydney Oval, promising more exciting cricketing action in the ongoing series.
