Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes locked horns with each other in match no. 49 of the ongoing Big Bash League 2022-23 at the Gabba in Brisbane on Friday (January 20).

Put in to bat first, Brisbane got off to a slow start and lost two of their batters with just 24 on the board in 4.1 over. Matt Renshaw (41) and Sam Hain (33) powered the team to a fighting total of 162/6. Meanwhile, Riley Meredith and Joel Paris picked up two wickets each for Hobart Hurricanes.

On the last ball of the 10th over, Hurricanes’ D’ Arcy Short bowled a tossed-up delivery towards the leg stump to Marnus Labuschagne, which the right-handed batter tried to sweep but missed, and the ball rolled off the pad to backward point. Hurricanes’ skipper and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade appealed for a Leg Before Wicket (LBW), but the umpire didn’t seem convinced.

Further, Wade consulted D’Arcy for Decision Review System (DRS) and asked, ‘was it pitching in’ to which the latter straightaway responded by saying, ‘No!’ and soon the commentators burst into laughter. Fans on social media also loved the 32 year’s old honest verdict.

In reply to the Heat’s total, Hurricanes failed to chase down the set target and managed to score only 150 for the loss of 5 wickets. Wade (45) and Tim David (24) played well but couldn’t get their team to a victory, and eventually, Hurricane’s lost the contest by 12 runs.

Michael Neser scalped three wickets for Heat’s and gave away 27 runs in his quota of 4 overs. Neser guided Heat’s to a much-needed win as they now moved up to the fifth spot in the points table and their chances to make it to the qualifiers are still alive.

On the other hand, Hurricanes have slipped further down to the seventh position in the points tally.
