Denis Shapovalov opened his Internazionali BNL d'Italia campaign on Tuesday with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Polish qualifier Kamil Majchrzak in just 66 minutes.

The Canadian No. 13 seed, who reached the semi-finals at the Foro Italico last year (l. to Schwartzman), struck three aces and won 81 per cent of his first-service points and will next challenge Stefano Travaglia of Italy.

Reilly Opelka, who came into this ATP Masters 1000 event with just two clay-court wins to his name, has doubled his career tally so far this week. The big-serving American struck 20 aces past #NextGenATP Italian wild card Lorenzo Musetti, clinching one break in each set for a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 72 minutes.

Opelka, who arrived in Rome on a six-match losing streak, beat France’s Richard Gasquet on Sunday, and won 30 of 35 first-service points against Musetti to improve to 4-10 lifetime on red dirt.

The 23-year-old, whose best performance at a Masters 1000 event came last year, when he reached the 2020 Western & Southern Open quarter-finals (l. to Tsitsipas), will next play third seed Daniil Medvedev or Aslan Karatsev on Thursday.
