What is the proper etiquette when contractors are working inside my home?

My ex and I were restoring some broken leaded glass windows in Tudor style house. They had three daughters living at home and coming from an all girl family myself, I told my ex let me go up to the upstairs bedrooms myself to look at the windows. I was glad I did, the maid didn't come till the afternoon to gathered the Laundry.
